When people say whitewater around Moab they mean two places: Westwater Canyon and Cataract Canyon. Both are Class III and above, both demand more of you than the Moab Daily, and both are the reason serious boaters come here.
Westwater is Class III to IV and runs as a long day or an overnight, so it is the accessible option. Cataract is Class III to V, takes three to six days, and holds the biggest rapids in Utah. Both carry substantially higher minimum ages than the Moab Daily.

How They Differ
Westwater opens gently. Several miles of ordinary desert canyon, then the walls turn black and close in, and the rapids arrive in quick succession with limited room to recover between them. It is the closest serious whitewater to Moab and fits into a single day, which is why most people who want whitewater end up here.
Cataract is a trip of two halves. The flatwater approach to the Confluence takes days, then the river doubles in volume and the whitewater that follows is genuinely large at spring flows. You are committing most of a week and going a long way from a road.
Difficulty ratings assume a range of conditions rather than a fixed number. Cataract is Class III at moderate flows and Class V at peak runoff, and those are not the same river. The same is true of Westwater in a milder way. BLM describes it as challenging at all water levels, which is a useful corrective to the idea that low water means easy water.
Are You Ready For It
As a passenger on a guided trip you do not need whitewater experience. Outfitters take people with none through both canyons regularly, and the guides carry the technical load. What you do need:
- Reasonable fitness and mobility. Getting in and out of boats, scrambling on rock, holding on when it matters.
- Comfort with the possibility of swimming. It happens more here than on gentle sections.
- Honesty about medical conditions. These canyons are remote and evacuation is slow.
- Age above the operator minimum, which is substantially higher than for the Moab Daily.
If you are choosing a first ever rafting trip, this is not it. Start with a beginner trip and come back.
When to Go
- Late May to mid June for the biggest water. Cataract at its most serious, Westwater at its pushiest. Also the coldest.
- July and August for a moderated version with warm weather. Still substantial whitewater, more forgiving.
- September and October for technical low water and comfortable temperatures. A different kind of good.

Commercial trips through Westwater and Cataract have a strong safety record, but both canyons are remote, the rapids are consequential, and a rescue takes hours at best. Cold water during spring runoff compounds everything. Be honest with your outfitter about your group, and take the safety briefing seriously.
