Guided TripsFamily Rafting in Moab
Rafting is one of the few Moab activities that genuinely works across a wide age range, and the gentler sections were made for it. The decisions that matter are which section, which season, and being honest with the outfitter about what your group can handle.
Most outfitters take children from around four or five on the Moab Daily. Midsummer is the best season because the water is warm. Minimum ages rise during spring high water, so confirm directly rather than assuming the published figure applies to your date.
Minimum Ages
| Section | Typical minimum | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Moab Daily | Around 4 to 5 | The standard family option. Rises during high water. |
| San Juan River | Varies by operator | Good family multi-day. Confirm for the specific reach. |
| Westwater Canyon | Substantially higher | Class III to IV. Not a family section. |
| Cataract Canyon | Substantially higher | Class III to V and multi-day. Teens and up. |
Published minimum ages assume normal conditions. Outfitters raise them when flows are high, which mostly means spring. A family trip that falls apart at the put-in because a six year old is suddenly too young is an avoidable disappointment. Ask when you book, and ask again if you book months ahead.
Which Trip
- Young children, first time. A half day on the Moab Daily. Short enough to hold attention.
- Older children, keen. A full day, with the beach lunch and swimming that comes with it.
- Teenagers wanting more. Ask about whitewater options, but read what that involves first.
- A family adventure with several days. The San Juan is the usual recommendation. Manageable water and genuinely interesting country.
Best Season for Families
Midsummer, without much competition. July and August bring warm water, moderate flows and the lowest minimum ages of the year. Swimming becomes a pleasure rather than a hazard, which changes the whole trip for children.
September is the close runner-up: comfortable air temperatures, low clear water, fewer crowds. The water is cooler than midsummer but still pleasant.
Spring is the difficult one. High cold water, higher minimum ages, and a real cold water risk. See spring conditions before booking a family trip in May.
Practical Notes
- Life jackets are provided and fitted. Children get properly sized ones. A badly fitted jacket is worse than none, so let the guides do it.
- Swimming ability helps but is often not required on calm sections. Tell the outfitter honestly who can and cannot swim.
- Heat management matters more than the water. Children dehydrate and burn faster than adults. Hats with straps, long sleeves, constant water.
- Bathroom logistics. On a half day this is manageable. Ask the outfitter how they handle it if you have small children.
- Manage expectations about the rapids. Children who are told it will be terrifying tend to be frightened. Children who are told it will be splashy tend to love it.
Outfitters hold the permits, supply the gear and run the shuttle. Read the section in detail first so you know what you are booking: the Moab Daily in detail.
Commercial trips near Moab have a strong safety record and guides are trained in swiftwater rescue, but whitewater is inherently dangerous. Tell your outfitter honestly about swimming ability, medical conditions and the fitness of everyone in your group. That information changes what they recommend.
Family Rafting FAQ
What is the youngest age for rafting in Moab?
Most outfitters take children from around four or five on calm sections like the Moab Daily. Minimums are set by the operator and rise during high water.
Is rafting safe for children?
On appropriate sections with a licensed outfitter it has a strong record. Everyone wears a fitted life jacket and guides are trained in swiftwater rescue. It is still a river, so section choice and honest information about your group matter.
Do children need to swim?
Often not required on calm sections, though it is an advantage. Tell the outfitter who cannot swim so they can plan accordingly.
What is the best time of year for a family trip?
July and August, when the water is warm and flows moderate. September is a close second with better air temperatures.
Half day or full day with kids?
Half day for under sixes. Older children usually manage a full day well and enjoy the beach lunch.
