Rafting Moab in Fall

Fall is the season locals quietly prefer. The water is low and clear, the heat breaks, the crowds thin, and permits loosen. What you give up is the big whitewater. What you get is close to the best conditions of the year for everything else.

The short version

September and October. Low clear water, warm days, cold nights, far fewer people. Whitewater turns technical rather than big. Westwater's daily permit cap rises on 1 October, from five permits to seven and from 75 people to 150.

What the Water Does

Flows settle to their seasonal low and stay stable. The water clears up considerably as the sediment load from runoff drops out.

  • Whitewater becomes technical. Rocks that were buried at high water are now obstacles. Rapids require line choice and boat handling rather than raw commitment.
  • Some sections get bony. Low water means more scraping and, on shallow stretches, occasional dragging.
  • Flatwater is at its most pleasant. Less wind on average than spring, comfortable temperatures, excellent camping.
  • Water clarity improves markedly. A different aesthetic from the muddy runoff months.

Who Fall Suits

  • Canoeists and flatwater paddlers. Labyrinth and Stillwater are at their best.
  • Photographers. The best light of the year, with cottonwoods turning gold along the corridor.
  • Anyone who dislikes crowds. Traffic drops sharply after mid October.
  • Private boaters chasing permits. See below.
  • Technical whitewater boaters who enjoy reading water rather than powering through it.

Permits Get Easier

1 October is a real threshold

Westwater's private allocation rises from five permits or 75 people per day to seven permits or 150 people per day on 1 October. That is a substantial increase on the hardest non-lottery permit in the region, and it is the single best reason to plan an autumn trip.

Canyonlands sections have no daily launch limits at any time of year, so Cataract, Stillwater and Meander are obtainable in autumn much closer to your launch date. See the permits guide for the full picture.

What to Bring

  • Layers for a wide daily swing. Warm afternoons and genuinely cold nights are normal, particularly in October.
  • A warmer sleeping bag than summer. Desert nights drop fast once the sun goes.
  • Splash protection. The water is colder than summer even though the air is pleasant.
  • Shorter daylight planning. Days are noticeably shorter by October, so build camp earlier than you would in July.
Outfitter schedules wind down

Commercial operations reduce through October and many stop entirely by month end. If you want a guided trip late in the season, book early and confirm the operator is still running.

Is fall a good time to raft in Moab?

For most purposes it is the best time. Comfortable weather, low clear water, fewer people and easier permits. The exception is big whitewater, which needs spring.

How late in the year can you raft?

Commercial trips generally run to the end of October. Private trips continue year-round on some sections with appropriate gear and experience.

Is the whitewater still worth it in fall?

It changes character rather than disappearing. Rapids become technical and require more precise boat handling. Many experienced boaters prefer it.

Is it easier to get a Westwater permit in fall?

Yes. From 1 October the daily cap rises from five permits or 75 people to seven permits or 150 people.
