Colorado River Rafting Near Moab
The Colorado is the reason Moab is a river town. Five distinct sections run within reach of it, and they could hardly be less alike, a half-day float you can take a five-year-old on, a granite gorge that demands real skill, and a multi-day expedition with the biggest whitewater in Utah. Picking the right one matters more than anything else you'll decide.
For a first trip, the Moab Daily, half or full day, Class II to III, minutes from town. For real whitewater without a multi-day commitment, Westwater. For the biggest water in the region, Cataract Canyon. For an easy first private overnight, Ruby-Horsethief. For quiet canyon miles with no rapids at all, Meander.

International Scale ratings assume a range, not a fixed number. The same rapid at spring runoff and at September low water are different problems. Check current flows before you commit, and treat any rating, including ours, as a starting point rather than a promise.
Which Section Suits You
You're visiting Moab and want a day on the water
The Moab Daily, without much doubt. It starts minutes from town, runs Class II to III, and fits neatly around a morning in Arches. Most outfitters take children from around four or five. It is the trip the overwhelming majority of Moab visitors actually do, and it earns that.
You want whitewater that means it
Westwater Canyon is the closest serious whitewater to Moab, 17 miles, Class III to IV, through a gorge of black Vishnu schist. BLM describes it as challenging at all water levels and recommends it only for experienced boaters. It runs as a long day or an overnight.
You have several days and want the biggest water in Utah
Cataract Canyon, below the Confluence in Canyonlands. Class III to V at high water, with rapids that draw comparison to the Grand Canyon. This is a genuine expedition, generally three to six days.
You're organising your first private multi-day trip
Ruby-Horsethief. Twenty-five miles of mostly flatwater with Class I to II rapids, and a permit you can actually get on a rolling 60-day window. Good camps, ancient rock, and no whitewater that will punish an error.
You want canyon scenery without rapids
Meander Canyon drifts down to the Confluence with no whitewater at all. Deep canyon, side hikes, and quiet. Bear in mind that below the Confluence is Cataract, so your exit needs planning before you launch.
TimingWhen to Raft the Colorado Near Moab
Flows are driven by snowmelt in the Colorado Rockies, so the river peaks in late spring and drops through the summer. Roughly:
- April to early June, runoff. Highest, fastest and coldest water of the year. Best for big whitewater, hardest on the unprepared.
- Late June to August, dropping steadily. Warm, family friendly, and the busiest season. Heat above 100°F and afternoon thunderstorms are the concerns.
- September to October, low and clear, fewer people, excellent weather. Some whitewater turns technical at low flows; nights get cold.
Year-to-year variation is enormous. A strong snow year and a drought year produce completely different rivers in the same month, which is why we point at USGS gauge 09180500, Colorado River near Cisco rather than publishing a number that will be wrong. That gauge is the reference for both Westwater and the Moab Daily, with daily records back to 1913.
During spring runoff, water temperature will incapacitate an unprotected swimmer far faster than most people expect, well before the rapids become the problem. Wetsuits or drysuits are standard early season for a reason. Judge the water temperature, not the air temperature.
Permits on the Colorado
If you're going with an outfitter, permits are their problem. On private trips they are yours, and every section is different:
